Recently Deleted on iPhone: recover photos or delete them for good
Photos you delete on iPhone go to the Recently Deleted album and stay there for 30 days. To find it, open Photos and scroll to Utilities (under Collections on iOS 26 and later), tap Recently Deleted, then View Album, and unlock it with Face ID or Touch ID. Tap Recover to get a photo back, or Select, More and Delete to remove it for good. After that, Apple can’t bring it back.

| Empty the album | Select, then More › Delete All | Gone for good; the space comes back |
| Do nothing | Wait | Photos deletes each item 30 days after you deleted it |

Where it is
Find Recently Deleted on your iOS version
The album has always been under Utilities, but Utilities moved twice. Check your version in Settings › General › About, then follow its row.
| iOS version | Recently Deleted |
|---|---|
| iOS 26 and iOS 27 | Photos › Collections › Utilities › Recently Deleted |
| iOS 18 | Photos › scroll down below your library › Utilities › Recently Deleted |
| iOS 16 and iOS 17 | Photos › Albums › Utilities › Recently Deleted |
It opens locked. Since iOS 16, Recently Deleted and Hidden need Face ID or Touch ID by default, so the album first shows a View Album button instead of your photos.
To skip the lock, open Settings, tap Apps, then Photos, and turn off Use Face ID. Apple notes that this unlocks the Hidden album too, so leave it on if you keep private photos there.

Free the space now
How to permanently delete photos on iPhone
Deleting from Recently Deleted is the step that gives the space back. It is also the only step you can’t undo, so look through the album first.
- 01
Open and unlock Recently Deleted
Go to Utilities, tap Recently Deleted, tap View Album and use Face ID or Touch ID.
- 02
Check for mistakes
Scroll through once. Recover anything you didn’t mean to delete before you go on.
- 03
Choose photos or the whole album
Tap Select and tap the photos to delete, then tap the More button and Delete. To empty the album, tap Select, then More and Delete All.
- 04
Confirm
Apple’s confirmation reads Delete from All Devices or, in a Shared Library, Delete Photos I Added. With iCloud Photos on, the photos are deleted for good on every device that syncs with it.

When a deleted photo isn’t in Recently Deleted
Recently Deleted is a safety net, not a guarantee. Apple documents these cases where a photo never lands there or leaves early.
| Case | What Apple says |
|---|---|
| You were over your iCloud storage limit | Apple says deleted photos are removed right away and aren’t in Recently Deleted |
| The photo was in a shared album | Apple says photos deleted from a shared album are deleted immediately |
| It was in your Shared Library and someone else added it | Only the person who added it can recover it from Recently Deleted, so ask them |
| More than 30 days have passed | Photos has already deleted it permanently |
Maybe it wasn’t deleted. Apple’s checklist for missing photos starts with Recently Deleted, then the Hidden album (hidden photos don’t appear anywhere else in Photos), your Shared Library, and whether iCloud Photos is on for this iPhone. If you hid the Hidden album, turn on Show Hidden Album in Settings › Apps › Photos.
Removed from an album only? Remove from Album leaves the photo in your library, so it never goes to Recently Deleted. Deleting it from Photos removes it from every album at once.

After 30 days
Can permanently deleted photos come back?
Not through Photos. Apple says that a photo deleted from Recently Deleted, or one that reached the end of its 30 days, can’t be recovered. What’s left is a copy that lives somewhere else.
- A copy on a computer or drive. Photos you exported to a folder or an external drive that doesn’t sync with iCloud Photos aren’t affected by what you delete on the iPhone.
- Another cloud service. If another photo app backed up your camera roll, check that service; it may have its own trash with its own rules.
- An iPhone backup. Apple says an iCloud backup includes photos only when iCloud Photos is off, because iCloud Photos already syncs them. Restoring a backup replaces what’s on the iPhone now; for an iCloud backup, Apple’s steps start by erasing it. Save anything newer than the backup first.
Apple documents no other way to undo a permanent delete, so treat Delete All as final.

Storage
Why your storage didn’t change after deleting
A deleted photo stays on your iPhone for its 30 days in Recently Deleted, so iPhone Storage doesn’t drop until you empty the album or the days run out. That catches people out after a big cleanup: the library looks smaller, but the space is still taken.
iCloud is different. Apple says items in Recently Deleted don’t count toward your iCloud storage, so iCloud space frees as soon as you delete.
If the space still doesn’t come back after you empty the album, look at the other causes in iPhone storage full? Free up space from photos.
Cleaning up first
PhotoCleanse uses the same safety net
We make PhotoCleanse, so weigh this with that in mind. It finds duplicate and similar photos on your iPhone and marks one BEST photo in each group to keep, lets you swipe through photos left to mark and right to keep, and compresses large photos. Your photos aren’t uploaded.
It never deletes on its own. Every delete goes through Apple Photos and the iOS confirmation, so the photos it removes land in Recently Deleted and can be recovered there for 30 days, exactly as described above. When you’re sure, empty the album to get the space back.
The free plan covers 3 duplicate-group cleanups, 1 Swipe deck and 1 compressed photo a month; PhotoCleanse Pro removes the limits.

PhotoCleanse is made by Vlad.
Where do I find recently deleted photos on my iPhone?
In the Photos app, under Utilities. On iOS 26 and 27, tap Collections and scroll down to Utilities. On iOS 18, scroll down below your library. On iOS 16 and 17, tap Albums and scroll to Utilities. Tap Recently Deleted, then View Album, and unlock it with Face ID or Touch ID.
How long do photos stay in Recently Deleted?
Apple says 30 days. After that, Photos deletes them permanently and you can’t get them back. You can delete them sooner yourself, or recover them at any time within those 30 days.
Can I get photos back after deleting them from Recently Deleted?
Not from Apple Photos. Apple says that when you delete a photo from Recently Deleted, you can’t get it back. Only a copy you made elsewhere can help: a computer folder, an external drive, another cloud service, or an iPhone backup made before you deleted it. An iCloud backup holds your photos only if iCloud Photos was off, and restoring a backup replaces what’s on the iPhone now.
Why is the photo I deleted not in Recently Deleted?
Apple names a few cases. If you were over your iCloud storage limit, deleted photos are removed right away. Photos deleted from a shared album are deleted immediately. And after 30 days, Photos removes items for good. If the photo wasn’t deleted at all, check the Hidden album and your Shared Library, which Apple lists for missing photos.
Can I permanently delete photos without waiting 30 days?
Yes. Open Recently Deleted, tap View Album and unlock it, tap Select, choose the photos, tap the More button, then Delete. To empty the whole album, tap Delete All instead. Confirm, and they’re gone right away.
Do photos in Recently Deleted take up storage?
They stay on your iPhone until they’re deleted for good, so the space comes back only after 30 days or when you empty the album. Apple says items in Recently Deleted don’t count toward your iCloud storage.
If I empty Recently Deleted on my iPhone, does it delete them from iCloud too?
Yes, with iCloud Photos on. A photo you delete in Photos is deleted on every device signed in with the same Apple Account, and the confirmation in Recently Deleted reads Delete from All Devices. iCloud.com has its own Recently Deleted album that works the same way.
